What if you’re shooting with a new camera, and you need to know how long your memory card will last you? All you need to know is the bitrate of the camera’s codec and a simple formula. There are video bitrate calculators out there, but they don’t include every codec, and doing this by hand is actually really simple. The formulas are at the end of the article, but I encourage you to read through the process, step by step. This will empower you to be able to work with any type of file or video stream, no matter the format.

Don’t be scared by all of the numbers involved in calculating video bitrates – anyone can do this.

bits versus Bytes

There’s only one thing you need to watch out for, and that is the difference between bits and bytes. The concept is simple: One byte is 8 bits. That’s all there is to it.

To convert between bits and bytes, you multiply by 8 or divide by 8. You just need to make sure you know which of them you’re dealing with. When they’re abbreviated, people use a lowercase b for bits and an uppercase B for bytes. Unfortunately, though, some people are not aware of the difference, and they will sometimes use the wrong one. Nearly all of the mistakes people make when talking about bitrates come from confusing bits and bytes.

When someone tells you about video bitrates, they usually give you that number in megabits per second (Mbps or Mb/s). That’s straightforward. Occasionally (less common) someone will give you the number in megabytes per second (MBps or MB/s). Whether or not the M is capitalized doesn’t matter – just look at the B.

A video bitrate is the amount of data that the file contains for each second of video. A simple formula describes the bitrate, the file size, and the length of the video. If you have two of those three, you can calculate the third.

Example Scenario

For example, let’s say we have 2 hours of footage (120 minutes), we’re converting our footage to Avid DNxHD 175, and we want to know how much storage space we need.

Avid DNxHD 175 footage is 175 Mb/s (isn’t that handy?). We pretty much always talk about storage space in terms of bytes, though (megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes). So the first step is to take the number in Mb/s and convert it to MB/s. But do we divide by 8 or multiply by 8? I think of it like the word “yard,” which is 3 feet. If I have 12 feet, that’s 4 yards. We have more feet than yards, just as we have more bits than bytes. We are starting with bits in this case, so we should end up with fewer bytes. That tells me that I need to divide by 8, not multiply by 8:

175 / 8 = 21.875MB/s.

Now we have MB/s (megabytes per second), but we need that in terms of minutes, not seconds. So let’s convert from MB/s to MB/m (megabytes per minute). The number of megabytes in one minute should be a lot more than the number of megabytes in one second, right? So we know we need to multiply by 60, not divide by 60.

21.875 * 60 = 1,312.5MB/m.

Now we have MB/m. All we do is multiply by the number of minutes we have. We shot 2 hours, so that’s 120 minutes.

1,312.5 * 120 = 157,500MB.

Conversion to gigabytes

Ok, we have our result, but it’s kind of a big number, isn’t it? It would be easier to talk in numbers of gigabytes, not megabytes, so let’s convert to gigabytes.

One terabit/byte is one trillion (1,000,000,000,000) bits/bytes.
One gigabit/byte is one billion (1,000,000,000) bits/bytes.
One megabit/byte is one million (1,000,000) bits/bytes.
One kilobit/byte is one thousand (1,000) bits/bytes

You’ll notice that each one is a thousand times larger than the next. So if you’re going up the scale, you divide by a thousand, and if you’re going down the scale, you multiply by a thousand. We want to go up the scale from megabytes to gigabytes, so we divide by 1000.

157,500 / 1,000 = 157.5GB.

There we go – now we know how much hard drive space our 2 hours of DNxHD 175 footage will take up!

Formulas

The explanation above should allow you to take whatever number you have (bitrate, file size, length of video) and calculate whichever one you don’t know yet. It’s important to understand why video bitrates work the way they do, because you won’t always be able to apply a simple formula.

But hey, we like formulas, right?

So here are the simplified formulas which you can calculate instantly. In these formulas, you need the bitrate in megabits and the file size in gigabytes.

File size = bitrate * number of minutes * .0075.
Bitrate = file size / (number of minutes * .0075).
Number of minutes = file size / (bitrate * .0075).

Wondering where .0075 comes from? Remember that we divided by 8, then multiplied by 60, then divided by 1,000?

1/8 * 60 / 1000 = 0.0075.

It’s important to note that, if you are calculating video bitrates with this method, you are calculating the average bitrate. If your codec is variable bitrate (VBR), then the bitrate will at times be higher or lower than that number.

How to find out codec information from a file

QuickTime and VLC can both do this very easily, though they only give you basic information. There are a few different tools that can give you a lot of information, but my favorite is MediaInfo. It’s available to download for Windows or Mac here, or you can get it on the Mac App Store for 99¢.

In QuickTime: open the file that you’re interested in, and then go to the menu bar and select Window > Show Movie Inspector, and a window will appear with basic codec information.

We are using Milestone VMS, we can see a KB above the camera’s feed but it seems too low, for example – I have a camera set on 640X360 that takes 1Kb. Can this be only for one frame? (even though it sound pretty low as well).

In the Milestone software, the value above the cameras feed in the Management Client is the value per frame in KB (Kilobytes). To convert it to Kbps, multiply that value by 8 (converts from Kilobytes to Kilobits) and then multiple it by the frame rate of the camera.

For example, if the value is 1KB and you are recording 15fps then your bitrate would be 120 Kbps (1KB * 8 * 15). It is going to be an approximation because if the preview is showing 1KB, that means it could be anywhere between 0.5KB and 1.4KB. Because of that, your bitrate would more accurately be somewhere between 60 Kbps and 168 Kbps if your framerate was 15fps.

I don’t understand why a movie or YouTube video has a certain bitrate (like 1100 kb/s or N/A) with a high level of quality. When I convert a video file, I find I need to use 1500-1800 kb/s bitrate, x264 “veryslow” preset, “fastdecoding” tuning selection, and “main” profile within the input/codecs to get at least a 99% identical quality for a higher disk-size. e.g: A 2 hour long movie will be 1.1GB. The converted with these settings will be 1.58-1.7GB. Its Ok but it could be better.

Any help to accomplish equal quality for fair disk-space would be appreciated. I’m hoping to get equal quality more/less down to the pixel.

I tried what you recommended, even set the CRF to 27. Its not 100% identical to the original, but I am pretty content. And the 2 hour movie is 1.03GB in size. Thank you.

Another question, After editing my videos, I like to render them in lossless, and in mkv format, so I can save the details. Then I convert it to mp4 in vlc. Can I get away with this, or is there a better solution?
Also, just out of curiosity, why is it not recommended to force Main as profile?

I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the outstanding content on the OTTVerse website. In my first article, I wanted to introduce those new to streaming media to the essential free tools necessary for their practice, MediaInfo and Bitrate Viewer.

MediaInfo

MediaInfo is a video analysis tool that displays the most significant data points regarding a video file, including resolution, data rate, codec, bit depth, frame rate, duration, etc. It’s available for download here, and there are versions for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and many other operating systems.

Once you install MediaInfo on Windows, you should explore the preferences that you access from the Options menu (Figure 1). Here you choose your default view out of the about 15 different views for the data. I prefer the Tree view shown in Figure 3 and use the HTML view shown in Figure 4 frequently to view encoding details—more on that below.

The three checked boxes on the right are checked by default. Most relevant is to enable the Explorer extension, which allows you to right-click a media file and open the file within MediaInfo. You can open multiple instances of MediaInfo, and once an instance is open, you can change files by dragging a different file onto the interface.

Back in the preferences window, it’s also nice to be able to hover your pointer over a media file in Explorer and load the Explorer Tooltip, which identifies the container format, data rate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and codec-related information like profile (Figure 2).

Figure 3 shows the data presented by MediaInfo. There are three major sections, General, which shows container format, duration, file size, overall bitrate and other data; Video, which details video characteristics, and Audio, which does the same for audio. Most of the information is self-explanatory, like Format (codec), profile, duration, bit rate, width, height, frame rate, and bit depth.

I’ve just started working with HDR files where information like color primaries and mastering display color primaries are absolutely essential to understanding critical parameters of the file you’re about to encode and the files that you’ve produced.

Bits/pixel is another critical data point, which as the title suggests, shows the amount of data allocated to each pixel in the video. Figure 3 shows an 8K file which is why the bits/pixel value is a relatively low 0.039. As a very general rule of thumb, a bits/pixel value of around 0.1 is sufficient to produce good quality in a 1080p H.264-encoded video.

So, if you’re watching a 1080p H.264-encoded video that looks terrible, and the bits/pixel value is 0.05, the problem is very likely that the data rate was too low. If you watch a very high-quality 1080p video and the bits/pixel value is 0.400, it’s a good guess that the data rate is much higher than necessary.

If you’ve to compare two videos with different resolutions and bitrates, the bits/pixel value gives you a common data point to compare how much compression was applied to the file. Most codecs get more efficient at higher resolutions, and, of course, HEVC is more efficient than H.264, which is why a bits-per-pixel value of 0.039 for an 8K HEVC encoded video is more than adequate.

The other highlighted description in Figure 3 is Encoding Settings, and here MediaInfo, particularly in HTML view, becomes a gold mine, especially when viewing most files encoded with FFmpeg.

You see this in Figure 4, which you access by clicking View > HTML. In this view, you see all the encoding settings either applied in your command string or via default values in a neat little grouping, which you can search by clicking Ctrl-F. This gets particularly useful with HEVC, which has dozens of parameters that appear in the Encoding settings listings.

When you’re experimenting with new FFmpeg settings, you should check your output in this view after each encode. FFmpeg doesn’t always report command string errors, and unless you verify that the settings worked as advertised, you may later find that they don’t.

The HTML view is also wonderful for understanding how other producers are encoding their files. When researching the impact of the VBV buffer here, I downloaded files from Apple, CNN, and other services to learn what VBV values they used in their videos, which verified many of my assumptions and recommendations.

However, not all codecs and encoders provide this information. For example, if you encode using the AV1 codec in FFmpeg, encoding settings don’t appear. Ditto for encodes with many other encoders.

Note that you can’t use drag and drop file loading when in HTML view; MediaInfo will attempt to load and play the file. So, click back to Tree or other view and MediaInfo should load the file and display the file-related data normally.

BitRate Viewer

The other software program, BitRate Viewer, is only available for Windows and can’t input any codecs newer than H.264, so HEVC, VP9, and AV1 are all out. If you can live with these limitations, you’ll find the program useful in several scenarios. For example, as shown in Figure 5, bitrate control techniques significantly impact the moving-average data rate of the file (wavy blue line) and the peaks and valleys in the data rate.

On top is a 1080p test file encoded at 5 mbps using 200% constrained VBR, and you see the data rate peaking at 8203. On the bottom, the file is encoded at 5 Mbps using 110% constrained VBR encoding, and the peak rate is 5852, much more palatable for those streaming over 4G or even 5G. If viewers on constrained connections experienced buffering issues in the first file, one glimpse at BitRate Viewer would explain why.

As my consulting and teaching practice has extended beyond H.264 and Windows, I use Bitrate Viewer less and less. Still, virtually all streaming producers are delivering H.264-encoded video; if you’re still experimenting with your encoding parameters and have a Windows workstation around, Bitrate Viewer will probably come in handy.

VLC is easily one of our favorite media players (and yours too ). While it can handle nearly every movie you throw at it, it can also do so much more. You don’t need to be a power user to understand all of its incredible, built-in features; you just need to know they exist. And we’re happy to show you everything amazing VLC can do on your desktop PC.

1. How to download YouTube videos with VLC

There are plenty of third-party apps, browser extensions, and websites you can use to download YouTube videos. You also don’t need any of them, since you can do this directly through VLC:

  1. Find a video on YouTube—like this one —and copy the URL from your browser’s the address bar.
  2. In VLC, head to Media > Open Network Stream.
  3. Paste the YouTube link in the box and click Play. You might have to wait some time for the video to start. (If it’s not working, or not loading after a long while, you might want to try this fix to see if it helps.)
  1. Under Tools, click Codec Information.
  2. In the box that says Location, right-click the block of text and click Select All. Copy this text to your clipboard.
  3. Go back to your browser and paste the link in the address bar. This will open the source file directly on YouTube’s servers.
  4. Right-click the video as it plays and select Save Video As.

  1. Load up a video—it can be anything. Hit pause before it starts.
  2. Right-click on the video and click View. Then, click on Advanced Controls.
  3. Start playing your video, and press the red Record button in the player itself. When its background turns blue-ish, you’re recording.
  4. Press the red Record button again to stop recording
  5. Go find the clip you created. In modern versions of Windows, that’ll be in your “Videos” user folder.

3. How to capture your desktop with VLC

This is a great trick if you’re trying to show someone instructions for doing something on their Windows or Mac systems—especially if you don’t have the ability to share your screen over a web meeting.

  1. Under Media, click “Open Capture Device.”
  2. Click the “Capture Mode” dropdown and select “Desktop.”
  3. Modify the frame rate. 15 f/s will probably be good enough for desktop recording, though 30 f/s may be required for more fast-paced movement.
  4. Click the dropdown arrow next to “Play” and select “Convert.”
  5. In the “Profile” dropdown, choose MP4—either h.264 or h.265.
  6. At this step, you can click the tool icon to modify the settings of this profile. Here you can modify things like resolution or bitrate. We’ll use the default settings for now, but you can come back here later if you need to tweak the final product.
  7. In the Destination box, choose a location to place the finished file.
  8. Click Start.

VLC will now capture a feed of your desktop behind-the-scenes. Let it run while you record your workspace. When you’re done, you can click the stop button in the player controls to end the recording.

4. How to convert video files with VLC

VLC also has a pretty decent built-in video converter, if you need a quick fix and don’t have time to fuss with something like HandBrake .

  1. Under Media, click “Convert/Save.”
  2. Add the file you want to convert in the File Selection section.
  3. Click “Convert/Save.”
  4. In the Settings section, pick the file type you’re converting to under the “Profile” drop-down. (We recommend an .MP4, h.264 or h.265.)
  5. Give the file a name and location under Destination.
  6. Click Start. If you want, you can watch the conversion’s progress (and get an estimated duration) within VLC itself.

5. How to record your webcam with VLC

Your webcam might have come with software to take pictures and record videos, but VLC is probably better. Not only can you choose several different types of formats for the recordings you make, you can also tweak a number of fine-grain settings as needed—possibly more than your webcam’s software would natively allow.

  1. Under Media, click Open Capture Device.
  2. In the “Capture mode” drop down, DirectShow should be selected by default. If it isn’t, select it.
  3. For “Video device name” choose your webcam.
  4. For “Audio device name” choose your microphone—which might also be your webcam, if you aren’t using a separate one.
  5. Click “Advanced options.”
  6. If you want to use the software that came with your device to control input settings, choose “Device properties.”
  7. Otherwise, enter a value for “Video input frame rate.” 30 is a good rule of thumb for smooth video, though you can use less if you’re not concerned about quality.
  8. Click Okay.

At this point, you have two options. You can click Play to play live video through VLC and record segments as needed by pressing the red Record button (as mentioned previously). You can also choose “Convert/Save” from the dropdown menu and select where you would like the recorded file to go.

Both methods have their advantages. The former allows you to preview your video and take clips in short bursts. However, this method requires headphones, as it can create a feedback loop. It also also lead to a more sluggish recording on slower computers.

Using the Convert/Save method avoids the feedback problem, but it also doesn’t provide you much information on what you’re looking at or when you’re done recording. You can stop the recording by pressing Stop in the player, but there’s no indicator that you are still recording at the time.

Like in my opinion, input bitrate means the vidieo data stream to the current pool, and demux bitrate is the data get out from the current pool , So I can simply get buffer size through this two parameter, am I right?

Possibly, using one of these cache sizes. But you may have to get that cache size from the VLC App, since there doesn’t seem to be a way to get or set any of these from Python.

It seems to set the caching values means to set the total size of the buffer pool, like, when I set the file-caching=2000, it means the upper limit of buffer pools is 2000ms, in another word, the max time of video the buffer pool can store is 2000ms. what I want to get is the real-time buffer size when streaming the video data, because the pool is not always full, so 2000ms may not be the value I want, am I right? So, any other adivce? correct me if I am wrong

It’s important to understand how the bitrate control corresponds to video quality and the file size. In general, a higher bitrate will accommodate higher image quality in the video output. At the same bitrate, video in a newer codec such as H.264 will look substantially better than an older codec like H.263. Another consideration is that variable bitrate (VBR) encoding will produce better image quality than constant bitrate (CBR) in most applications. First, let’s have a look at the units of measure for video encoding, and then we’ll look at the differences between Constant Bitrate (CBR) and Variable Bitrate Encoding (VBR). Finally, we show you how to use Encoding.com to produce CBR and VBR output.

What is a video bitrate?

A video bitrate is the number of bits that are processed in a unit of time.Remember that 1 byte consists of 8 bits. Video data rates are given in bits per second. The data rate for a video file is the bitrate. So a data rate specification for video content that runs at 1 megabyte per second would be given as a bitrate of 8 megabits per second (8 mbps). The bitrate for an HD Blu-ray video is typically in the range of 20 mbps, standard-definition DVD is usually 6 mbps, high-quality web video often runs at about 2 mbps, and video for phones is typically given in the kilobits (kbps). For example, these are the targets we usually see for H.264 streaming:

How to choose the correct bitrate for your workflow?

When it comes to choosing what bitrate is best for your video workflow, it is important to take into account what device your videos will be played on. As we mentioned above, internet videos, phone videos, and HD blu-ray videos for tV all vary in bitrate. Consider what platform your video will be viewed on prior to selecting your bitrate. Once you have determined how your users will be viewing your video, you can use our video encoding API to apply VBR bitrate to your media files.

What’s the difference between Constant Bitrate (CBR) and Variable Bitrate (VBR) Encoding

Constant bitrate (CBR) encoding maintains a set bitrate over the entire video clip, but limits the image quality in most cases—especially for complex video segments. CBR is often not an optimal choice for streaming since it does not allocate enough data for the complex segments: this results in lower quality overall and unused capacity on the simple segments. Therefore, we recommend you avoid using CBR unless you have a specific requirement.

At Encoding.com, VBR is our default processing mode and will typically produce significantly higher quality at similar bitrates. The primary benefit of VBR encoding is that it allocates a higher bitrate to the more complex segments of media files and lower bitrates to the simple segments. Adding up the bitrates and dividing by the duration (in seconds) gives the average bitrate for the file. This average bitrate usually compares favorably with the equivalent CBR bitrate. Although VBR encoding requires more processing time, for most content it produces superior visual quality.

Using CBR in special cases

Occasionally, compression requirements mandate that you use CBR—especially in the case of live event video streaming. VBR is the default setting for Encoding.com, since it generally provides much higher quality. However, for complex video segments—in which there is a high amount of action or detail—VBR will often spike up to 300% of the target bitrate.

By contrast, CBR is far more restrictive. The actual bitrate often varies only within about 20% of the target. This is important in the case where some of your target audience has legacy hardware or low-buffer decoders that are unable to handle VBR. With H.264 being built into most modern chipsets, this is not an issue for most customers. Another prominent use of CBR is with satellite television broadcasts, in which many channels are multiplexed into one transport stream that has limited bandwidth.

You can chose CBR or VBR in any of your encoding jobs, with either of the following methods.

In the web interface or watch folder:

1. Specify your source video location.

2. Click the Customize button.

3. Expand the Video Settings menu.

4. Set CBR to No or Yes.

Or, if you are using the API, simply set the no or yes in the section of your API calls.

Step 1. Open VLC and Click on Convert/Save

Your DVD disc should have been inserted in the DVD drive. Now open VLC media player, tab Media > Convert/Save….

The shortcut is Ctrl+R.

Step 2. Go to the Disc Tab to Convert

Tap Disc, your DVD disc and its name will show up in the box of Disc device. If you have more than one DVD drive, you can select the drive where you want to rip the DVD disc from the drop down.

Here’s an important setting: remember to check on ☑ No disc menus. I have tried ripping a DVD disc without checking it, and VLC will get stuck in ripping DVD menu over and over – if you don’t close VLC manually, it will never stop by itself.

After all these are set, click on Convert/Save.

Step 3. Set the Profile and Destination

In this step, you are going to choose an output profile and select a destination. VLC provides more than 20 profiles includes:

  • Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
  • Video – VP80 + Vorbis (Webm)
  • Video – H.264 + MP3 (TS)
  • Video – H.265 + MP3 (MP4)
  • Audio – MP3
  • Video for MPEG4 1080P TV/device

H.264 + MP3 (MP4) is the most versatile option that works great for videos.

To select the destination, you will need to click on Browse, select a location to save the file, and input a file name by yourself.

Step 4. Press the Start Button

The last step is to press the Start button to begin the DVD ripping process. The upper left corner of VLC media player will display “Converting dvdsimple”. After done, you can browse to the destination path on your computer and view the ripped DVD video.

How to Solve “There is No Audio after DVD Conversion”

I see people discussing various issues on the forum about ripping DVDs with VLC. For example, no audio after conversion, this is the issue most people have experienced, or, the video ratio is inconsistent with the original, the picture is abnormal and pixelated, etc. What’s more troublesome is that it’s hard to find a definitive solution. VLC is really not a worry-free software in ripping DVDs or converting videos.

If your DVD disc does have audio and plays fine with audio in VLC media player, it just doesn’t have audio after converting with VLC, you can have a look at the solutions below.

Solution 1: Change an output profile. Some containers cannot hold certain formats.

Solution 2: Ensure that the conversion audio bitrate matches.

  1. Check source video audio information: Tools > Codec information, and check the audio sample rate.
  2. Click on the Edit selected profile icon in Step 3, and change the sample rate from whatever number to the one that matches the source file.

Solution 3: Change the audio sample rate to 48000HZ and change the audio codec to MPEG 4 audio (AAC).

Solution 4: Update VLC to the latest build, or downgrade VLC to 2.0 version.

In this article, we show how to find the frames per second in a video in Python using the OpenCV module.

OpenCV has a number of built-in features that allow us to extract data from a video.

One of the features we can get is the frames per second (FPS) there are in a video.

Frames are the images that make up a video. A video is a series of images shown in sequence. The frames per second tells us how many images there are per second of video.

To find the frames per second of a video using OpenCV, we use the following statement, cv2.CAP_PROP_FPS

This will get the frames per second in a video using OpenCV.

To see this in actual code, see the code below.

First we create a cap variable, which connects us to the video that we want to process.

Next, we create a variable, framespersecond, which will store the frames per second of this video, princess.mp4.

Next, we print out the frames per second in the video.

The frames per second is a very important piece of data because it is related to the speed that the video needs to played at in order to played at a rate that is human watchable. The frames per second represents the frequency, meaning the number of images that appear per second. Going back to the classic science formula, the time period, T= 1/f. So using this formula, we can calculate how much delay we need to insert into a video based on the frames per second of the video. This is the real usefulness of frames per second. Knowing this, we can do this simple calculation to find out how much delay we need to give a video in order to slow it down enough to make it human watchable.

Going over some examples let’s say that a certain video has a FPS of 20.

Doing the math, this gives a time period, T= 1/f = 1/20= 0.05 seconds

Let’s say another video has a FPS of 50.

Doing the math, this gives a time period, T= 1/f= 1/50= 0.02 seconds.

So you can see that if a video has a greater FPS, there is less time delay needed.

So you can see how the frames per second of a video factors in to let us know how fast to play a video. Based on the FPS, we can figure out the time period needed for each package of frames per second in order to play a video smoothly.

The reason that we need to introduce a time delay is because computers can play videos fast, very fast, much faster than our eyes can watch a video. In order to make a video human watchable, we need to introduce time delay to slow it down. To know the time delay needed, we calculate it based off the FPS, which can be found according to the formula, T= 1/f. That’s why all of this is important.

And this is how we can find the frames per second of a video in Python using the OpenCV module.

“How fast does my internet need to be to stream?” is one of the most frequently asked questions by those interested in starting to stream. Understanding your internet speed and how it relates to your stream can be a little bit confusing at first. But, once you understand the requirements to stream, particularly your upload speed, and how it relates to the bitrate of your stream, it really isn’t that complicated.

Upload Speed

The first thing you need to understand is that streaming means you are uploading your captured video to the internet, so your upload speed, not your download speed, is the important number to look at. Your upload speed is the rate at which you can transmit bits over the internet. Bits are packets of information, in the case of streaming its the stream itself. So, the recommended upload speed is 5Mbps (5000kbps). This speed allows you to stream at almost any quality you wish to, whether that be 720p at 30 fps or 1080p at 60fps. The minimum upload speed is 3Mbps (3000kbps), which will allow you to stream comfortably at 720p at 30fps. Anything less and your stream will pixelate.

How do I find out my upload speed?

There are no shortage of tools and websites out there that will help you find this out, however the one I recommend is testmy.net/upload. I find it more reliable and accurate than the other sites. Once you have completed your test, click on the “Result Details” tab and the top line of the results is what you are interested in.

Better than simply just testing your speed, if you are interested in streaming on Twitch I recommend the Twitch Bandwidth Test app. This app not only tests your upload speed to each of Twitch’s servers, but also tests your RTT to the servers and the potential quality of your stream. The RTT is the time it takes to get a response from the server. The quality takes into consideration bandwidth throttling, congestion, and packet loss to give you a number on a scale of 1-100 for your stream on the server. Anything above 80 is good enough for streaming.

When setting up your stream you need to set a bitrate, this is the amount of bits you transmit per second in kbps. The greater your upload speed the higher you can set your bitrate, and the higher quality you can stream. So, in theory if your upload is 3400kbps, then should you set your bitrate to 3400kbps? No, your bitrate should never be more than 80% of your the upload speed you got in the earlier test. In reality your upload speed will not always be at that speed, so when your speed drops below that the viewer will experience dropped frames.

Choosing a Suitable Bitrate

As a streamer you want to make your stream as accessible to as many people as you possibly can. Currently the global average download speed is somewhere around 5Mbps. By streaming at a bitrate greater than 5000kbps, or even 3500kbps, you are greatly limiting the amount of people who can watch your stream. Even if you have the capability of streaming at a higher quality, doing so is not necessarily the best option. Sites like Youtube Gaming and Beam.pro offer transcoding, or quality options, to partnered and non-partnered streams. This means that even if they can’t watch on source, they can decrease the stream quality to a resolution they can. However, sites like Twitch and Hitbox only offer transcoding options to partnered channels and a limited number of non-partners. As a new streamer or a non-partnered channel, choosing to stream at lower bitrate would be a wise choice.

For new streamers, 720p30 (1280×720 resolution, 30 FPS) is widely regarded as the optimal stream quality, allowing you to produce a high quality product whilst making it as accessible to as many people as possible. As you progress through your streaming career and, hopefully, getting partnered, you can consider increasing the stream quality. Aside from your upload speed and the download speed of your viewers, you also need to consider the capabilities of your computer. Unless you have a dedicated streaming machine or an extremely high end PC, you may run into problems playing and streaming on the same machine. Streaming at a higher quality puts more of a strain on your PC, especially the CPU. The following are what we recommend for a selection of quality options:

  • 1080p60 – 4500kbps to 6000kbps
  • 1080p30 – 3000kbps to 3500kbps
  • 720p60 – 3000kbps to 3500kbps
  • 720p30 – 1800kbps to 2500kbps
  • 480p30 – 900kbps to 1200kbps

Maximum Bitrate

It costs streaming sites lot money to run the servers for streaming, as such they will often implement a maximum bitrate. Exceeding these maximum values may not stop you from going live, but it can flag tracking systems. You may just be asked by staff to decrease your bitrate or in some cases, your channel could be automatically shut down.

  • Twitch – 6000kbps
  • Youtube Gaming – 9000kbps max recommended, no enforced limit
  • Mixer – 10000kbps
  • Hitbox – No limit

In conclusion, in order to stream you ideally want to have an upload speed of 5Mbps, at the very least have 3Mbps. These speeds will allow you to transmit a visually pleasing stream, without dropping frames. When selecting your bitrate, you should always remember to never have it higher than 80% of your upload speed. Do what you can to make sure as many people as possible can watch your stream, whilst not sacrificing too much quality.
